They didn't just build a café.
They built a reason for people to come back.

THE STORY AT A GLANCE
Business: The Flywheel Bar & Café Location: Beaufort, Victoria Opened: August 2023 Today: Café · Bar · Live Music · Events · Community

THE TRANSFORMATION
Small Café → Local Meeting Point → Food & Drinks Destination → Live Music Venue → Community Hub → Recognizable Local Brand

THEY STARTED WITH A STORY

The building came first.

The Flywheel operates from the historic Beaufort Motors building at 27–29 Neill Street. The building dates back to the late 1920s and originally operated as Wilson's Motors.

Over the decades, the site evolved through several identities:

Motor mechanics → Holden dealership → RACV service station → Fruit & vegetable shop → Café & bar → The Flywheel

The building also has a distinctive Baroque-style façade and Spanish-style geometric tilework.

That gave The Flywheel something most new businesses spend years trying to create:

A story people can remember.
The location already had history. The brand simply knew how to use it.

THEY TURNED HISTORY INTO BRANDING

The name The Flywheel connects naturally with the site's automotive heritage. Instead of separating the new business from the building's past, the brand made that history part of its identity.

THEN
Beaufort Motors
NOW
The Flywheel
SAME DNA
Automotive Heritage + Modern Hospitality
This creates a brand that feels authentic to its environment. It doesn't feel like a concept
designed in a boardroom. It feels like something that belongs there.

The location isn't just where the business operates. The location is part of the product.

THEY STARTED SIMPLE
The Flywheel didn't need to become everything overnight. It started with the fundamentals:

Coffee · Food · Hospitality
Coffee created a simple entry point. A traveller could stop for a coffee. A local could grab breakfast.
A customer could discover the building and its atmosphere.

THE PROGRESSION
Coffee → Food → Drinks → Live Music → Events →
Community
Start with one strong reason to visit.
Then build additional reasons to return.

THEY CHANGED THE EXPERIENCE
The biggest evolution was moving beyond the traditional café model
CAFÉ | BAR | LIVE MUSIC
Its offering expanded across:
Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner · Coffee · Local wine · Local spirits · Live music · Tastings ·
Degustations · Special events

This changed what the business represented.A traditional
café competes for a meal. A destination venue competes for an experience.

LIVE MUSIC BECAME A REASON TO RETURN
This is one of the most important parts of the model.

Food gives someone a reason to visit.
Events give them a reason to come back.

The Flywheel has incorporated recurring entertainment and experiences into its identity, including:
Solo artists · Live bands · Open mic nights · Wine tastings · Gin and spirit tastings ·
Seasonal events · Creative experiences · Community gatherings

BEFORE
Should we go to The Flywheel?

AFTER
What's happening at The Flywheel this week?

The second question is much more powerful. The business is no longer competing only
for food occasions. It's competing for people's time, attention and social plans.

THEY SELL EXPERIENCES, NOT JUST MEALS

A traditional café might promote: New menu available. The Flywheel can promote live music,
tastings, local artists and special events. Each experience becomes more than an event. It becomes:

PRODUCT + CONTENT + MARKETING
One event can create:
Visitors → Photos → Videos → Social Content → Shares →
Word of Mouth → New Visitors

The experience creates the content. The content promotes the experience. The cycle continues.
Marketing becomes a system instead of a campaign.

THEY BECAME PART OF THE COMMUNITY

The strongest local businesses don't simply operate in a community. They become part of it.
The Flywheel has positioned itself within Beaufort's broader ecosystem of events, tourism, entertainment and local activity

BEFORE
A café in Beaufort.

AFTER

One of the places where things happen in Beaufort.

When customers associate a business with music, events, local culture, gatherings and experiences, the business becomes more than a place to buy something. It becomes part of the local routine.

PARTNERSHIPS EXPANDED THEIR REACH
The Flywheel also connects with local producers, musicians, artists, tourism organisations and other businesses
One example is Mrs Baker's Still House, which has used The Flywheel as a Beaufort location for gin and liqueur experiences.

THE MECHANISM
THEIR AUDIENCE + PARTNER'S AUDIENCE = GREATER
REACH
Instead of paying to reach every new customer independently, partnerships allow audiences to discover each other. For local businesses, this can be one of the most efficient ways to expand awareness.

THE LOCATION BECAME A
CUSTOMER-ACQUISITION CHANNEL

The Flywheel sits on the Western Highway in Beaufort, between Ballarat and Ararat and around 160 km from Melbourne.

THE LOCAL MARKET

Coffee · Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner · Music · Events ·
Community
THE TRAVELLER MARKET
Coffee stop · Food stop · Rest stop · Destination stop ·
Regional experience
The business also highlights parking, V/Line access and accessibility. Tourism organisations feature The Flywheel as part of the wider Pyrenees and Goldfields visitor experience.
The highway creates discovery.
The experience creates the reason to return.

THE BUILDING DOES MARKETING FOR THEM
The physical location isn't simply a place to operate. It's a marketing asset.

HERITAGE FACADE → ROADSIDE VISIBILITY →
RECOGNIZABLE APPEARANCE → PHOTOGRAPHY &
SOCIAL CONTENT → STRONGER BRAND MEMORY
The Flywheel has also received local support for façade restoration and business identification, helping activate its prominent frontage. In a market where many cafés can look interchangeable:

RECOGNIZABILITY BECOMES A COMPETITIVE
ADVANTAGE.

THE FLYWHEEL EFFECT
The most interesting part of the business is that the strategy almost behaves like its own name.

HERITAGE — Creates the story.
COFFEE + FOOD — Creates the first visit.
LIVE MUSIC — Creates repeat visits.
EVENTS — Create urgency
COMMUNITY — Creates belonging
PARTNERSHIPS — Create new audiences.
SOCIAL CONTENT — Amplifies everything.
REVIEWS + WORD OF MOUTH — Build trust.
TOURISM — Brings new visitors.
GREAT EXPERIENCE — Turns visitors into regulars

THE FLYWHEEL KEEPS TURNING.

WHAT ACTUALLY MAKES THEM RECOGNIZABLE?
01 — THE BUILDING
A historic roadside landmark.

02 — THE NAME
Connected to the site's automotive history.

03 — LIVE MUSIC
A recurring reason to return.

04 — EVENTS
Constant reasons to visit again.

05 — COMMUNITY
A place where local things happen.

06 — LOCAL EXPERIENCE
Food, coffee, drinks, artists and events.

07 — TOURISM
A stop worth making when travelling through the region.

Together, these create something much harder to copy than a menu.

THEY CREATED AN IDENTITY.

THE BIG LESSON
The Flywheel didn't simply grow by selling more food.

THEY STACKED REASONS TO VISIT.
Coffee → Food → Heritage → Bar → Live Music → Events →
Local Partnerships → Community → Tourism
Each layer strengthens the one before it

Coffee creates the first interaction. Food extends the visit. Heritage creates differentiation. Music creates repeat occasions. Events create urgency. Partnerships create reach. Community creates belonging. Tourism creates discovery.

And the entire system feeds itself.

THE VEVIBE TAKEAWAY

The strongest local businesses aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest marketing budgets.
They're often the ones that build a system where every part strengthens another.
A great location creates discovery.
A strong story creates memory.
A good experience creates repeat visits.
Events create urgency.
Community creates loyalty.
Partnerships create reach.
Content amplifies everything. Eventually,
the business reaches a point where people don't simply ask:

What do they sell?

They ask:
WHAT'S HAPPENING THERE?

And that is when a business starts becoming a brand.

THE FLYWHEEL

From a historic building to a local destination
From a café to a community venue.
From individual events to a repeatable growth system.
